What did you all think of the scene in the RotK EE where the Lord of the Nazgul sort of 'confronts' Gandalf in Minas Tirith? There are a number of things I didn't like..... But mainly, the Witch-King somehow being able to break Gandalf's staff, and Gandalf kind of quailing in fear of the Witch-King. Opinions? P.S. There are some insightful thoughts on this topic here.

hated most of it. Gandalf's staf should not have been broken, nor should pip even think about attacking the WK.

It was a clever scene, but completely irreverent of the book. Tolkien made it quite clear in the books that after Gandalf was ressurrected, he was pretty much invincible. He feared no mortal thing, but was wary of Witchking. His staff breaking, however, was a serious offense; particularly for those of us who study lore. A wizard's staff is his power; the most closely guarded of all his possesions. Gandalf would not so easily let his staff be broken by carrion scum.

It was in the extended edition, and I absolutely hated it. If Gandalf was able to stave off several Nazgul to protect Faramir and his men, why couldn't he do the same for the WK?

Yeah, that and it just doesn't mesh with the whole Gandalf the White thing. Although he feared Witchking, he wasn't that scared of him!

I didn't really like that scene either, but I liked the way you see some of Pip's courage come out.

And his stupidity. Trying to rush a nazgul!!! He should've learned by now that they're something to avoid.

Totally disrespectful! Absolutely unconscionable! It's even vulgar! I liked the films but that scene made my stomach churn.

hated most of it. Gandalf's staf [sic] should not have been broken, nor should pip even think about attacking the WK. umm... In the books Pip actually Killed the Witch King. In that light, I don't think that the movies went overboard there. As for Gandalf, I agree that his staff should not have been broken, however I don't see it as he was running away. Gandalf in taking command of the guard (after the passing of Denethor) was responsible for Minas Tirith. I think that while he could have confronted the Witch-King, to do so would have taken nearly all his effort, skill, and concentration. He chose instead to stay within Minas Tirith. Also, a confrontation could not have occured without the consent of the Witch-King, who gave no time for that merely landing long enough to break the staff and go. If he had chosen to stay Gandalf could and would have confronted him. Remember that the movies were not necessarily made for the reader, but for the moviegoer. Peter Jackson assumes that the majority of those watching the movie do not understand the significance of a wizard's staff.

First, wasn't it Merry and Eowyn who killed the Witch King? Second, I thought the scene was ok. It may have been stupid for Pippin to try and rush the WK, but he was only trying to protect Gandalf. That he didn't run when he first saw the Nazgul shows that he does have some courage. Besides, he didn't get very far. I do agree that Gandalf shouldn't have been potrayed as being afraid of the WK...it doesn't go with the character.
And Mouse, I still come around here sometimes, I just haven't been around for a few days.

first, um, ya, who ever said that it wasn't them? second, the second point of your second point is the whole point! it's in complete contradiction of the books! the only thing that is the same is that twk and gandalf met and that the rohirim distracted twk.
