Any time might be spent on scriptural debates, but there are many wholesome things that might be be discussed.
Ecclesiastes 3:1;9-11
1 "There is a time for everything,
and a season for every activity under heaven...
9 What does the worker gain from his toil? 10 I have seen the burden God has laid on men. 11 He has made everything beautiful in its time."
As important as scripture is, there are other things we should discuss and partake in. If one buries himself in scripture he will eventually remove himself from society (I'm not accusing you, I'm merely being the devil's advocate) and God commands us to reach out to society:
John 17:14-16
14"I have given them your word and the world has hated them, for they are not of the world any more than I am of the world. 15My prayer is not that you take them out of the world but that you protect them from the evil one. 16They are not of the world, even as I am not of it."
In the World and not of it so to speak. While we should not be OF society, as in taking part in the wrongful activities, we need to be aware of what is going on around us. So in debating ONLY the scripture we are removing ourselves from society. These books are thought provoking (as seen above), stimulating, and interesting. They are not in any way bad (unless they are taking away from time that should be spent discussing scripture- which would differ from person to person). So I think that this is a good discussion (which led to some interesting theological issues interestingly enough)
