find out what it means to me?
This post isn't random...quite.
Ever heard the phrase "Respect is earned"? So is it? I've heard many different theories...
I once had a teacher who said his policy was to have immediate respect for every person he met, and that it was up to each person to then earn (or more easily,) disearn his respect.
Knew another person who went by "Respect is earned" strictly. He had no respect for any person until they had proven themselves worthy.
Then was this girl who didn't believe in respect...except for herself....
I have developed for myself a policy as stated "Respect is something to give, and something owed, to every person. Expect no reciprocal. No excuses." Why? Did Jesus say he didn't love a man, because that man hurt him? Did Jesus ever stone, or spit upon a person out of hate or anger? And yet did he not ever such? There is no excuse for being uncourteous. Is no excuse to be disrespectful to any person. No matter the wrong they might do. Did Jesus ever pick up a rock thrown at him, throw back into the crowd, and then turn to his disciples and say "Oh, it's okay. It's not my fault. He threw it first." ?
Alright, no more ranting right now (if that even qualified) words vanish fast...
Your opinions please?

How are you respecting them? As fellow humans, created in the image of God? Are you talking about respect of character? Respect of deeds? Reputation?
Physical attributes? Heritage?

Yes, you need to define respect. It's definition also commonly changes from culture to culture. If someone raised their left hand to you, would think much of it? Probably not, but other people in other places would. Definitions are always fun

By respect she means courtesy...treating other people as if they were of higher status than yourself.

Then yes, respect should be given to anyone and everyone. Doesn't mean they deserve it, but it should be given to them.

If a person is not a thing (worthy of treatement as better than myself), then why should I treat a person as what they are not?

You do not treat everyone with respect on an unconditional basis. There are, in effect, NO excuses.
