It was a good day. The sun was shining down on the fields of Rohan, and Elendra was enjoying every bit of it. She had ridden out to this remote spot just after dawn. She had duties back at home, but not many, and they could be accomplished after dark. Being the grand-neice of the King of the Mark did have its advantages: she was free to go where she wished, as long as she told someone, and what diplomatic duties she did have could wait until after the sun went down, especially on a beautiful day like this. It was Elendra's habit to come out here and sit and think and enjoy the day. Today, she contemplated all she’d had learned in her twenty-three years.
Since her childhood, she had striven to model herself after the Lady Éowyn: to know little of fear, and to be skilled in battle. As she thought of it, being a shieldmaiden of Rohan was hard work. And then there was the diplomatic part of her relation to the King. Elendra found it difficult to be nice to people she despised. For that reason, she usually let her mother and aunts handle that. For their part, her aunts tried to keep her out of it, which was fine with her. She preferred to be alone when she couldn’t be with friends.
She lay down on the meadow’s heather and gazed up at the sky. Before she knew it, she was asleep.

Elestiel halted a short distance away from the horse. She could just make out the figure in the grass. She motioned for Faramir to stay and be silent, and moved slowly forward. Standing above the lady, she clucked her tongue. "A shieldmaiden of Rohan indeed. To fall asleep this close to the border? And not only that, but to let such an old person as myself draw near without challenge?"

Elendra woke with a start, and jumped to her feet. A jolt of fear mixed with surprise shot through her, and didn't stay long. The figure before her had a threatening presence, but if this woman had wished to kill her, she could have, and Elendra would never have known. "Who are you?"

Her face twisted into a mock frown, though it was streaked with bits of real sadness. "Do you not remember me? I have known you since you were a small child, Elendra. Guess at who I am"

Elendra squinted at the face before her. Then the recognition hit her like a slap in the face. "Elestiel? Where...? How...? It's been years!" Words failing her, she impulsively threw her arms around her mentor.

Elestiel paused, unsure what exactly to do. Rarely had anyone dared to hug her. Rarely had anyone ever truly wanted to. But she smiled and laughed, returning the embrace with an awkward hug. "My dear girl, it has been how long? You're so grown now... surely you must have things to tell." Faramir cleared his throat behind her, reminding her of her rudeness. "My apologies, to you both. My rudeness is overwhelming. This is my traveling companion, and I trust him completely. Faramir, this is Elendra. She was my student for many years. That was during my service to the Lord of the Rohirrim."

Elendra scrutinized this man Elestiel trusted. He had the look of one who was misplaced. Gondorian, from his appearance. His face bore a smile, though a weary one. It seemed that a lot of thought went on behind that fair face.
"I am pleased to meet you, Faramir," Elendra said pleasantly. "If Elestiel deems you worthy of trust, then I do as well."

Faramir bowed in greeting. "I am pleased to meet you as well, Elendra." She's beautiful... He abruptly shook the thought from his head. Yes, she was beautiful, but did it matter to him? No. It never had, and he swore that it never would. Enough! He cleared his mind of such thoughts. "I thank you for your trust," he cast a sidelong glance at Elestiel, "though I've done nothing to earn it."

She half-rolled her eyes and turned to Elendra. "If you don't mind, milady, I would like to get moving. It is nearly a day's travel to the nearest town, and a warm bed would both Faramir and myself much good."

Elendra nodded. "Of course." She whistled shrilly, and almost instantly her horse was at her side. She swung into the saddle in one easy motion. "Shall we be off, then?"
