I thought I'd see if I could find a mutual interest instead of a mutual disagreement with everyone here...
I know I'm not (hopefully not by far) the only one physically active on this forum.
But for those of you that haven't made it an important step to care for your bodies, I hope that's mostly due to medical problems, ignorance of how important it is, and not apathy/disregard for knowing it is important!
I personally was slacking, just doing some powerlifting and not much else once or twice a week, not really watching my diet or what I was eating. I tell you, it showed! My body is still young and fast, so I burn off fat just by thinking (Trust me, it's not cool. I'd love to weigh about 50-70 more lbs...), but my mind slowed because I wasn't staying active, maintaining a healthy circulation and giving my body enough fluids and nutrients to think clearly.
I would like to see everyone that can (if you have medical problems, I totally understand that. I've had my own issues. If you do have some issues, please, talk to me, I've read and done things in the physical area and I might be able to help you come up with some ideas you can try even with whatever problem it is!) start a physical program.
Run. Lift weights. Swim. Play tennis. Play golf. Walk. Do calisthenics (pushups, situps, pullups, anything involving moving bodyweight many times). Hit a bag. Wrestle with friends or in a league, play football. Box. Do INTENSIVE martial arts (Raise the heart rate for 20 minutes and break a sweat. Otherwise that school is even more bogus than most of them...) You can even do a dynamic (mobile) stretching routine that will make you more flexible than static stretching routines and will raise your heart rate for 20 minutes (if you're really dedicated, you can actually do a stretching routine that is an entire approximate 40 minute workout!).
Fluids. Fluids are actually more important than food. Food does you no good unless your body has enough fluid to break it down and move those broken down parts throughout the body. Ever heard the term "hydrate" or "dehydrated"? Well, those terms refer to having or not having WATER in your body. Note, please, that I said WATER and NOT Gatorade or milk or any other liquid.
As I learned from a friend of mine in speech class, most people are chronically dehydrated their entire lives. The way to tell is simple: You need to pee crystal clear urine. If it's yellow, your body is dehydrated, and every bodily function that requires water (We are over 70% water. That's every single function in the entire body.) is impaired. Drink water. An easy way to do it is let water get to room temperature, then chug it. You won't get sick if you let it get to room temp and chug about a pint to a quart at a time. The best place to store water is in the body.
So, pee clear. This alone will actually cause you to lose weight in most cases. Your stomach will be full of water, not fat, and your digestive tract will flush bad parts of food/move the good parts much faster and more efficiently. Plus, as this fellow said (and it's 100% true) it feels MUCH better when you need to go (Which, of course, will be a lot more often...lol) and it's clear. It's...well...better. Try it and you'll see.
Avoid bad foods. C'mon, our society is obsessed with healthy foods and healthy drinks. You already know what's good for you and what's bad. If you want general details: Protein, then carbs, then fats. Eat in that order and eat as much as is needful to maintain the weight you decide is healthy. If you've got more specific questions I've got more specific answers.
In closing, I would be very pleased with two things:
1. That I am preaching to the choir and you all are going to go "What, does he think I'm an idiot? I do all this! n00b."
and 2. That if 1 is not true, you'll ask questions on here about how to get started, ways to stay motivated, and tell us what you're going to do to fit your body as a worthy Temple for the Holy Spirit of God.
I hope that's something we can all agree on and do. Again, I'll help you if you have difficulties with anything. I'm not a genius and I'm not certified in anything, nor am I a professional, but I've been exercising for nine years and I'd jump at the chance to put all that experience at your disposal.
Oh, one more thing: Don't think you have to be Sylvester Stallone or Eric Liddel the first day you start, okay? According to statistics and surveys and my own experience, people usually want to see immediate results. Drinking water until your urine is clear is the only thing listed that will make changes you can recognize in the first day...you'll feel much better. Try it and see.
The rest takes time!
